Behind Closed Doors
Single Channel Video Projection on Upcycled Window panes
Aeson Baldevia, 2022
During the lockdown, cases of domestic abuse increased significantly. As we were mandated to stay in our respective homes, These issues never saw the light of day nor were highlighted because of the context that these occur in private spaces.
Domestic abuse comes in various forms, it can be physical, verbal, mental, or emotional. We can’t seem to draw the line if it is abuse or something tolerable as it’s considered taboo to converse about these situations.
Instances like gossiping, watching porn, and gambling may seem to be selfish acts yet unconsciously the community is at stake through its vile effects.
The tainted-through-time, broken and stacked windows represent the issues that had been societal problems that had existed for decades or even centuries but are still left out there undiscussed, unresolved. The 30-minute video compilation of various private activities is intended to be seen in full attention as we don’t get to see the real picture if we just “pass by” and be apathetic in these situations.
Through this artwork, the viewer becomes a voyeur of some sort, peeping into private and intimate moments. The artist questions if until when will these conversations and actions remain behind closed doors.
